Frequently Asked Questions

BlueScope (Pty) Ltd is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia and we have been manufacturing coated steel products since the 1960’s. BlueScope SA has been supplying product into Southern Africa for over a decade now and has become one of the leading suppliers of metallic coated steel throughout Africa. BlueScope SA is run from the Cape Town office where we supply ZINCALUME® steel, Clean COLORBOND® steel and other products nationally and throughout Africa. The name BlueScope is synonymous with quality and BlueScope products are manufactured to the highest standards. If your reputation is on the line, then make sure ours is on the steel.

The simple answer is NO, however BlueScope manufactures ZINCALUME® and Clean COLORBOND® steel in coil form and sell onto the rollformers or profilers who manufacture various roofing and walling profiles. These roofing profiles include I.B.R., corrugated/ s-rib profile and various concealed-fix profiles. In order to find a roofing profiler/ rollformer in your area visit our supplier locator page or contact us.

ZINCALUME® is the brand name for BlueScope’s premium roofing and walling product. Its world leading technology has been intensively researched and continually developed to meet the demands of the building industry. It has a proven mix of 55% Aluminium, 43.5% Zinc and 1.5% Silicon with a guaranteed minimum coating mass of AZ150 (150g/m2) to provide corrosion resistance of up to four times the life of Z275 galvanised steel in a similar environment.

BlueScope’s record of more than ten million tonnes of ZINCALUME® steel produced over 32 years has been achieved through the company’s commitment to product quality and a process of continuous research, development and improvement. ZINCALUME® steel is guaranteed to achieve a material strength of G300 or G550 as specified, with a guaranteed minimum coating mass of AZ150 (150g/m2). To ensure its superior performance BlueScope will not supply ZINCALUME® steel with a coating mass less than AZ150. Crucially, ZINCALUME® steel is also guaranteed to contain the correct Al 55%, Zn 43.5% coating mix without which corrosion resistance and product life deteriorates markedly.

A metal coated product’s life is ultimately decided by the environment to which it is exposed, the amount of coating metal applied to the base steel and the evenness of its application. BlueScope’s ZINCALUME® steel has a guaranteed minimum coating mass of AZ150g/m2 that is your guarantee of long life performance. BlueScope coating mass control technology is among the most advanced in the world. A sophisticated coating mass gauge is linked to a computer in a closed-loop control system ensuring accurate control and consistency of coating mass. Not all generic Al/Zn cladding is supplied with the correct alloy content of 55 per cent Aluminium and 43.5 per cent Zinc or with a guaranteed AZ150 g/m2. Generic AZ100g/m2 sheeting supplied in South Africa has a life expectancy of around half of that of genuine AZ150 ZINCALUME® steel.

Clean COLORBOND® steel is the brand name for BlueScope’s premium pre-painted roofing and walling product. It combines the best of modern steel making technologies; developed and tested over decades by BlueScope to deliver superior uniform colour retention Its ZINCALUME® steel base has an AZ150 zinc/aluminium alloy coating that delivers outstanding anti-corrosion performance. A conversion layer applied to the surface of the steel improves adhesion for a polyester primer baked onto the surface before a specially developed, exterior grade top coat is also baked on to ensure maximum resistance to chipping, peeling, staining and cracking.

All the steel products made from BlueScope Steel are 100% recyclable. For more information on the recyclability and sustainability of BlueScope Steel products then visit our sustainability tab.

Roofing sheets made from BlueScope products are of a superior quality and have a longer lifespan than galvanized steel sheets. Therefore we require a fastener that has the correct amount and type of metallic coating in order to match the life expectancy of the steel sheets. For more information read the Fact File 5 on Roofing and Walling fastener essentials in the technical library.

The most commonly available thicknesses in South Africa are 0.47mm TCT (Total Coated Thickness) or 0.53mm TCT. If you require a different thickness then please contact the local office.

The Base Metal Thickness (BMT) measures the steel substrate prior to any metallic coating or paint being added to the substrate. The Total Coated Thickness (TCT) measures the steel substrate as well as the metallic coating, resin coating and/ or paint film. If a BlueScope product is labeled as 0.42mm BMT means that it will have TCT of 0.47mm. If the BMT is measured at 0.48mm means that the product will have a TCT of 0.53mm. In South Africa we generally refer to the thickness of material as the TCT of a product, however for design calculations or structural design you should use BMT since the actual strength of the material is from its base steel. The metallic coating layer is providing the corrosion resistance performance against natural weathering.

It is important to note that the thickness of the material has no effect on the products corrosion resistance. The type and amount of coating mass will affect the corrosion performance of the product.

Material warranties are offered by BlueScope for all products. Warranty applications need to be completed by the roofing contractor and sent to BlueScope office via the metal sheeting or roofing supplier. For more information on material warranties and application visit the warranty page on this site.

All coloured materials will change colour when exposed to UV light – the paint finish on your car, the clothes on your line, and so on. When it comes to steel building materials, the extent of colour change is influenced by factors such as the colour itself, the aspect, the design of the structure and the environment. Dark colours are inherently prone to more noticeable colour change than lighter colours. Individual perceptions also come into play. How you see colour can differ greatly to someone else.

Using thermally efficient steel roofing materials like Clean COLORBOND® steel can help reduce your cooling and heating costs. In summer, a lightweight insulated roof made from Clean COLORBOND® steel can assist in minimising the amount of heat radiated into your home at night. That’s because Clean COLORBOND® steel has a low thermal mass, so it cools down fast once the sun is off it.

In winter the same steel roof, properly insulated, helps keep the heat inside. Building Regulations for your area will prescribe the level of insulation you will require. The choice of colour can also influence thermal performance. Lighter colours, in particular, radiate less heat during summer. Building regulations may allow you to install less insulation if you use lighter colours in warm climates.

BlueScope SA has revitalized their standard colour range to offer a 12 colour palette with a more contemporary feel for roofing and walling that have a modern look. The new Clean COLORBOND® steel colours include Dune®, Japser®, Shale Grey® and Heritage Red.

You can complete an online enquiry form or contact the office and we will have them sent to you as soon as possible.
